MINIMAL QUANTITY LUBRICATION (MQL)
OF THE CNC MILLING MACHINE

MQL is also known as minimal quantity cooling lubrication or dry machining. It is a technique used in metalworking, specifically in milling, to significantly reduce the amount of cooling lubricants used. Instead of channeling large quantities of coolant through the machine tool, MQL uses only a minimal amount of lubricant, typically introduced as a fine mist directly into the cutting zone.

Basic Principle of Minimal Quantity Lubrication

The basic principle of MQL is to ensure optimal lubrication while also supporting cooling, but with much less lubricant than traditional methods. Typically, only about 50 to 500 ml of lubricant per hour is used, compared to several liters that might be used in conventional cooling lubrication methods.

Benefits of Minimal Quantity Lubrication

  • Environmental Friendliness: By significantly reducing lubricant consumption, environmental impacts are minimized. There are fewer waste products, and the burden of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is reduced.
