Cast off, ship ahoy! Ship building is teamwork combined with state-of-the-art technology. It’s all about absolute precision. But boats are not just made out of wood; nowadays they are manufactured from a wide range of different materials. These include aluminium, plastics and composites. Boat builders create oversized models before they enter series production. Models and prototypes are also constructed for test series to promote research or test newly developed boats.
Our CNC milling centres can also machine workpieces on a large scale, i.e. with large 3D machining dimensions, in just one process, which means they far exceed the market standard – so we are definitely the right place to come if you want to perform the milling process in boat building!

For example, our bridge concept from the group of CNC milling centre products can be used to trim or mill or carve out oversized parts or a complete model of a boat. And this is done with the absolute precision of a high-performance milling spindle and the huge rates of acceleration of the axes. We have extensive experience of working with CNC machining centres with footprints of more than 16.0 x 5.0 x 4.0 metres and the corresponding cube dimensions of models in boat building.

Our CNC machining centre G-S-F/M is guaranteed to deliver productive solutions for any milling process. It is flexible and has a modular structure. For example, a tool changer that can be expanded to incorporate 48 tools has been designed for the CNC machine. The translucent, large retractable roof, which moves with the machine throughout the milling process, was developed for a working environment that needs to be protected from milling dust.
Not always made of wood –
the variable uses of our CNC machines in ship building
When materials such as CFRP, GFRP, PUR, Ureol or aluminium are processed to make boats and ships, there is no need for further machining of the milled edges on our machines – just like when milling wood. We adapt all components to the material, which allows us to achieve maximum machining quality. Our CNC milling machines are designed for dry machining or work with a minimal amount of lubrication for materials such as aluminium.

Delivering a CNC machining centre on a large scale requires lots of skilled people. Every single employee is a specialist who pays great attention to detail. Once they are finished, the milling machines, which can weigh up to 50 tonnes and have many thousands of individual parts and kilometres of cables, deliver a repeat accuracy of up to +/- 0.025 mm.
